Many clients tell me they think their accent prevents them from getting hired, but I tell them we all speak with an accent and accents should not be a barrier unless the employer is prejudiced. I personally believe that teaching accent reduction disrespects a person’s heritage. However, I do believe in communication skills training with the goal of understanding others and being understood.
Here is my method for connecting communication skills training to your career goals:
During my free consultation, I ask you about your career plans and challenges. Then, I ask if you would like to take a free online communications skills assessment. After that, we discuss your results and you decide what you would like to do next.
If you decide you want communication skills training, you’ll receive interactive lessons that build up your strengths and overcome your weaknesses by practicing scenarios that relate to your career. At the end of each lesson, we set a goal for the next lesson.
All lessons have lots of speaking and/or listening practice. You’ll learn what works and what doesn’t work. You’ll be in less danger of practicing errors.
Your homework asks you to engage in real-life conversations where you consciously use skills presented in your lessons.
I keep lessons manageable to avoid overwhelming you. You are in control of the pace and number of sessions.
Setting a solid foundation with a step-by-step goal-oriented method saves time. You experience success, avoid practicing errors, and are motivated by building the skills you need for career success. This is the “kill two birds with one stone” approach. If you want to experience this method yourself, please contact me.
